Keeping In Touch With Friends

Now, I know I'm not the only one in the world who is going to a different college than my best friend or friends from high school. In fact I'm the only one in my group of friends that's going to a different school from anyone else. That is really scary. While all of my friends have someone else to navigate the rough waters of freshman year with, I don't. It'll be me trying to figure it out and essentially starting over. Of course, I want to keep in touch with my high school friends but that's not always easy. I hope to stay in touch with them no matter where our separate roads might take us. I've put together a list of ways I'm going to stay in touch with my friends from high school that you can use too!

1. Email
This is really simple. All you have to do is sit down at a computer or use your smartphone and you're halfway there. Just type out an email asking them how they've been. You can get the conversation going by asking about how their classes are going, if they like the campus and how good the food is. You'll end up comparing your colleges in a fun way, and at the same time staying in touch with your friends you promised you always would.

2. Social Media
By social media I mean every platform you can think of. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, Pinterest you name it. No one ever got hurt by sending a quick message or tweet to their old friends wondering how life's been. I'm going to guess you're always on your social media so why not send a quick message? Who knows, maybe you'll get a quick reply and then you'll end up messaging for hours just to catch up.

3. Send Them a Card
Surely you know you're friend's birthday right? Well if they have one during the school year then send them a quick card. Something about getting mail is awesome but getting a birthday card from and old friend? Even better. It doesn't even have to be elaborate. All you have to do is send a nice card and no doubt they'll think of wanting to contact you to thank you. Even if it is a quick thanks over text at least you know that they still acknowledge your existence and haven't forgotten about you.

4. Text Them
Speaking of texting, you have your phone on you probably 95% of the day. So while you're surfing the internet or watching that hilarious viral video of a cat jumping into a sofa, send them a text. A 'hi' or 'hey how are you?' can do wonders. If they're someone who always has their phone in their hand the chances of getting a text back within a few minutes is very high. You spend a good amount of your day texting, so go text your friend!

5. Facetime/Skype or Give Them a Call
Texting and messaging are easy because you don't have to put that much effort into it. If you really miss your friend Facetime, Skype or give them an old fashioned call over the phone. Nothing is better than having an actual conversation with someone over the phone and seeing the person's face makes it all that better! You'll feel great by being able to see them and I promise you'll end the call with a smile on your face.

6. Go Visit!
Do you live in the same state as your friend? Do you not? Well regardless of your answer to either of these questions, what's stopping you from going to visit? You're eighteen so you can drive, hop on a flight or a train to go see them! Of course some methods are more expensive than others, but if they're you're best friend then you probably won't mind (just remember to spend a reasonable amount of money). Both of you will be happy to see each other and nothing can replace actually seeing and being with someone. If you can't afford to go visit them at their school, then wait until Thanksgiving or Winter Break rolls around. You'll both be back in your hometown and you can focus on catching up without the distraction of school.

I hope you guys will try your best to stay in touch with your good friends from high school. Yes, it's important to make new friends in college but it's equally important to keep in touch with your old ones. In fact go do it right now! Send them a text, a Facebook message, or whatever you want. Just do it!

All the best- Becca
