August Make-Up Haul

Hey everyone! School's starting up and if you're not already in school (I move in the 21st) then you have some time to do some last minute shopping! Make-up shopping to be exact. I went to the drugstore, Target and Ulta within the past few days and picked up some last minute beauty products. So I just thought I'd share with you guys some beauty tools and make-up that I found, like a lot/love and think are super affordable.

1. Milani Shadow Eyez
These are large sticks of eyeliner/shadow that I absolutely love! I actually discovered these when I was doing make-up for a local theatre company. The show was Peter Pan and the mermaids needed something that made them look mystical. After the head make-up lady experimented on my face with these pencils, not only was a beautiful mermaid face made, but I fell in love with these eyeliner sticks as well! I have the colors Green Safari and Aquatic Style which are beautiful, pigmented and shimmer a bit if they hit the light just right. I only use them for fun make-up styles since I'm not too adventurous with my eye make-up (maybe I should start? haha) but you could use them for everyday make-up looks if you so desire. I bought mine at CVS but I'm sure you can find them online and where ever Milani  product are sold.

2. NYX Powder Blush
I picked up a NYX blush from Ulta the other day because I didn't really have one and wanted to try one out. I picked up the color PB25 Pinched/Pince which isn't extremely pink but a darker pink. I've only used it once but I really like the color. I think it looked great when lightly applied so I believe anyone can play around with it and make it look amazing! My favorite part about this blush is that NYX cosmetics are 100% CRUELTY FREE!!! I love animals so I've been loving NYX everything as of late. I recommend if you're looking for relatively inexpensive cruelty free cosmetics, then NYX is a great brand to start off with.

3. e.l.f. (eyes, lips, face) Brushes
If you've been at the cosmetics section in Target you've probably seen e.l.f. products. They very inexpensive cosmetics that many people shy away from because they're so inexpensive. Many people see the low price and think it's great but then question the quality of the product. I can say that for the price, you get your moneys worth. I picked up three brushes from the e.l.f. brush collection.

Bronzing Brush
I haven't used this brush yet since I've had no real need to use bronzer yet, but I can say that I like the brush. It looks very clean and classic and good quality. It's bristles are at an angle and are dense for the price. I'll let you know in the future if this is a brush I recommend!

Total Face Brush
I actually already had one total face brush and bought another today! The reason being is that I use this brush for my Covergirl powder. I have really oily skin and therefore need powder to cover it up so I'm not shiny every time I'm in the light (Trust me, it's not pretty). I keep my current brush with the rest of my make-up brushes and plan on taking the one I got today and putting it in my make-up bag for touch ups on the go.

Eyelash and Brow Brush:
This is more along the lines of a spooly brush than anything else. I got this because I have a mini spooly and wanted a larger one. I really like it since I bought it for $1!!! It's working very well and is of good quality. You just can't beat $1!

4. e.l.f. Essential Shine Eraser:
These are basically oil blotting sheets and let me tell you, they are AMAZING!!! I bought three packs of 50 for $1.00. Do the math and that's $0.02 per sheet. So 150 oil blotting sheets at two cents a pop is a good deal if you ask me. These oil blotting sheets are great! I have really oily skin but I swipe them over my t-zone (I usually have to use two sheets but it depends on how oily your skin is) and ta-da! Oil, gone! I see it on the sheets themselves and am amazed these tiny sheets can pick all that gunk up. I totally recommend these and at $1.00 per pack, why wouldn't you try them out?!

5. e.l.f. Make-Up Mist & Set:
I haven't used this yet but plan on using it within the next few days. I was first introduced to this product when my friend used it. I asked her what it was, she told me and I was hooked. It only cost $3.00 for a 2.02fl oz/60ml at Target. I was pretty excited because I originally thought the price was $5.00. It has Aloe, Green Tea, Cucumber and Vitamins A,C& E in it. You just spray it on your face, let it dry and you're good to go! This is another product I will tell you if I will go purchase it again.

6. Keratin Complex Volumizing Dry Shampoo Lift Powder
Wow, that's a mouthful! This is probably my favorite purchase because of the discount I got! I was at Ulta and naturally went to the clearance stand. Well, there this little beauty was on clearance for $2.97 marked down from $34.00!!! What?! I know, that's a little more that 85% off!! I haven't gotten a chance to use this but I'm really excited to since it was such a good deal! The lesson here is don't forget those clearance racks! They sometimes hold diamonds in the rough!

I hope you all enjoyed learning about some make-up I recently bought. If you buy any products let me know what you think in the comments below. Good luck in your first week of college and remember, shop smart!

Who Cares What People Think?

Hey everyone! So  I figured I'd share a little something that happened to me recently. This summer I decided to take a six week dance course in Ballet/Lyrical and Jazz. After six weeks, Wednesday was my last night of classes. Now, I'm not a dancer in any way and the last time I took a dance class was in 8th grade. So its been a while since I even wore my ballet shoes. I felt pretty bad when I first began dancing again but slowly built my confidence and felt better about it.

But like I was saying, I took my last class and I felt completely stupid in ballet and I'll tell you why. My normal instructor was on vacation; I knew that and was okay with it. However, when I went to class I was the only one there. So not only was I learning ballet and lyrical from a different teacher, but my teacher was this guy who was only a few years older than me and I had never seen before. I'm an introvert by nature and it takes me a while to warm up to people. I'm also very awkward around guys and my self confidence isn't that high around them either. My mind goes into this state of the guy always judging what I was doing and how I looked and stuff like that. I know it shouldn't have bothered me but that's how I am.

It was especially awkward since dance is a lot about body alignment and it was his job to look at the position my body was in. He had to see if my waist was tall enough or my thighs were turned out correctly and so on. It was so embarrassing since I still hadn't mastered all of the ballet lingo and asked a few times what we were doing. But after I got through barre, we moved onto lyrical and let me tell you, I was not at all used to the style of lyrical he taught. His style was very unique and not at all what I was expecting. I'm not saying he was a terrible teacher, he was actually very good. I was just very self-conscious of everything I was doing.

The whole sequence was about pretending to be drunk so I can tell you that was very awkward for me since I've never been drunk before. Maybe he thought I was older or something but yeah, it was a bit uncomfortable. Not only that but the end sequence was me sitting on the floor in the middle splits pretending to hold up a beer bottle. I was absolutely mortified when I had to do it. And after that he told me to dance the sequence on my own which was okay during some parts, but a complete disaster in others. To top it all off some of the people who were in my jazz class were watching me through the window and I wanted to die. I didn't really know the dance that well and felt completely stupid doing it. But I pushed through and got to the end.

I was happy it was over and done with and I never wanted to be the only one in a class having the teacher watch my every move ever again. But as I drove home I thought to myself, you know what? Who the hell cares?! I danced in there and got through it in one piece so that's got to be worth something. I'm probably never going to see him again so why should I dwell on how bad I thought I looked in front of him? I shouldn't because it didn't matter. The past is in the past and in ten years he probably won't even remember that one girl who was in that one dance class that he substitute taught that one summer.

I guess the lesson of my story is that who cares what people think. Did I feel stupid? Oh, yeah. I did. I felt so stupid doing everything in that class. But again, why should I care? I shouldn't. It won't matter in a year. So if you want to join a new club or try out a new sport in college, but are too scared because of what people will think just ask yourself this: Who cares? You want to do that sport so you're gonna go do it! Who cares if you can't play Quidditch or can't debate international politics to save your life? If you don't care and are having fun, other people won't either! Just go out there and do it!

Remember guys, I know it may seem mortifying if you fall on your butt in Quidditch or have weak evidence to back up your arguments, but it's okay. All of those people who are good at the club or sport you just joined were at your level at one point too. They're there to guide you and help you improve, not tear you down (if they are tearing you down, maybe you should reconsider the clubs you're part of). So one day, when they leave, you can take over their spot and help people who will be at the same level you are at now. Just remember, this is college and when you're out looking for a job, no one will care if you fell on your face that first week of school. The only way it will matter to them is if it matters to you. So make sure you choose something that matters a lot to you and make it worth your while.

Shoes to Bring to College

Okay, I'm going to say it. I have a shoe addiction. What can I say? I love shoes. I believe that if there is one item in college that you need a selection of it's shoes. Why? Because shoes are what make your outfit complete. Without them, you'd be running around with bare feet and probably wouldn't be comfortable. Plus, your outfit would be like, ten times less cute. So I'm here to share with you some shoes I recommend you bring to college.

1. Tennis Shoes/Workout Shoes
The first pair of shoes I recommend is a shoe that will give you great support when you're working out. A lot of people work out in college in the gyms that they can access with their student ID card. With the right pair of workout shoes you'll always have motivation to go to the gym or just take a run outside. Not to mention you'll be staying healthy with all the exercise you'll be doing!

2. Ballet Flats
Ballet flats are the best kind of shoe to have because they're so easy to wear and look insanely cute. These shoes are my go to shoes in the mornings when I've overslept but still want to look put-together, ya know? You don't have to worry about lacing or zipping them up, just slip on and go!

3. Vans Style Shoes
These work wonders on those casual days where you don't want to wear shoes that aren't so sturdy or shoes that are ready to go hiking in the wilderness. Vans Style shoes are the perfect solution because they are casual but are cute. Not to mention you can walk around a theme park or go on a long walking tour without wanting to kill your feet.  The best part? They don't even have to be Vans. Yes the shoe style is in and it's a brand but I found some shoes at Payless that looked exactly like Vans and I got a ton of compliments on them. It also doesn't hurt to mention they were way cheaper.

4. Combat Boots
We all have those days when we want to channel our inner bad-ass. Combat boots are the perfect way to amp up your outfit and be totally comfortable doing it. Now the boots I'm talking about can be combat boots or combat like boots. Either way these boots come in a wide range of colors, boot lengths and heel heights. Just zipper or lace them up and you've created some instant edge to any outfit. Perfect for those cold fall days when you want to warm up or a nice spring day when you feel good enough to conquer the world!

5. Black Pumps
Classic. That's all I have to say. Black pumps should be owned by all women because of how versatile they are. You can wear them causally or formally and they give you an instant confidence booster. Who doesn't like to strut around in heels? They go with any outfit, are sold at lots of stores and are very affordable. They come in different heel styles and heights so you can get a pair you feel comfortable in. Plus, heels make your butt and chest look great! So what's not to love about them?

6. Sandals
Sandals are great for spring and summer time because you get to wear them and add something extra to any outfit. The great thing about sandals is that because they are sandals, you can wear them places that flip flops just aren't allowed. If you go to a school that doesn't allow 'no back heel' shoe (crazy yes, but they do exist) these do have a back strap that goes around your heel so you're all set!

7. Flip Flops
For the flip flops I recommend you bring two pairs to school. One pair should be cute and the other should be water resistant or ones that are safe to wear in water. The first pair should be cute because we all have those days when we want out feet to be free! The other pair should be water resistant so you can wear them in the shower. Unless you're lucky enough to have your own shower, you'll probably be sharing with several other girls. Can we talk about how dirty that's going to be? So in order to feel cleaner and avoid athlete's foot, bring some shower shoes. You can buy some at Target for less than five dollars so go and get on that!

8. Boots
Boots, my favorite fall shoe. The reason why I absolutely love boots is because they slip on and off and they're just so cute! You can choose from ankle, knee high or thigh high and choose your heel width as well. No matter how experienced you are wearing boots I guarantee you will love boots during the fall and winter seasons since they keep your legs warm and toasty.

9. Rain Boots
Does it rain a lot a your school? Rain boots are a must then. These boots will keep you dry during the rainy days and because so many places sell them now, you have a world of rain boots at your fingertips. Not to mention you can splash in as many puddles you want since you're wearing your great boots and you're parents aren't there to tell you not too! Hooray for college and adulthood!

10. Bold Shoes
This is a vague item but it's supposed to be. Bold shoes can be anything you want them to be. If your idea of bold shoe is a colored ballet flat? Awesome! If it's some sparkling platform cheetah pumps, great! The bold pair of shoes is supposed to be a pair of shoes you feel comfortable but unstoppable in. You define the word bold because if you feel like it's bold then that will show on the outside and you'll walk a little taller!

These shoes are all ones I'm bringing to college. You know the best part? They didn't cost me a fortune. Payless is like my holy grail of shoe stores and then there are places like TJ Maxx and Marshalls you can buy brand name shoes for less than retail. You can find shoes anywhere and getting them for a discount is even better!

Keeping In Touch With Friends

Now, I know I'm not the only one in the world who is going to a different college than my best friend or friends from high school. In fact I'm the only one in my group of friends that's going to a different school from anyone else. That is really scary. While all of my friends have someone else to navigate the rough waters of freshman year with, I don't. It'll be me trying to figure it out and essentially starting over. Of course, I want to keep in touch with my high school friends but that's not always easy. I hope to stay in touch with them no matter where our separate roads might take us. I've put together a list of ways I'm going to stay in touch with my friends from high school that you can use too!

1. Email
This is really simple. All you have to do is sit down at a computer or use your smartphone and you're halfway there. Just type out an email asking them how they've been. You can get the conversation going by asking about how their classes are going, if they like the campus and how good the food is. You'll end up comparing your colleges in a fun way, and at the same time staying in touch with your friends you promised you always would.

2. Social Media
By social media I mean every platform you can think of. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, Pinterest you name it. No one ever got hurt by sending a quick message or tweet to their old friends wondering how life's been. I'm going to guess you're always on your social media so why not send a quick message? Who knows, maybe you'll get a quick reply and then you'll end up messaging for hours just to catch up.

3. Send Them a Card
Surely you know you're friend's birthday right? Well if they have one during the school year then send them a quick card. Something about getting mail is awesome but getting a birthday card from and old friend? Even better. It doesn't even have to be elaborate. All you have to do is send a nice card and no doubt they'll think of wanting to contact you to thank you. Even if it is a quick thanks over text at least you know that they still acknowledge your existence and haven't forgotten about you.

4. Text Them
Speaking of texting, you have your phone on you probably 95% of the day. So while you're surfing the internet or watching that hilarious viral video of a cat jumping into a sofa, send them a text. A 'hi' or 'hey how are you?' can do wonders. If they're someone who always has their phone in their hand the chances of getting a text back within a few minutes is very high. You spend a good amount of your day texting, so go text your friend!

5. Facetime/Skype or Give Them a Call
Texting and messaging are easy because you don't have to put that much effort into it. If you really miss your friend Facetime, Skype or give them an old fashioned call over the phone. Nothing is better than having an actual conversation with someone over the phone and seeing the person's face makes it all that better! You'll feel great by being able to see them and I promise you'll end the call with a smile on your face.

6. Go Visit!
Do you live in the same state as your friend? Do you not? Well regardless of your answer to either of these questions, what's stopping you from going to visit? You're eighteen so you can drive, hop on a flight or a train to go see them! Of course some methods are more expensive than others, but if they're you're best friend then you probably won't mind (just remember to spend a reasonable amount of money). Both of you will be happy to see each other and nothing can replace actually seeing and being with someone. If you can't afford to go visit them at their school, then wait until Thanksgiving or Winter Break rolls around. You'll both be back in your hometown and you can focus on catching up without the distraction of school.

I hope you guys will try your best to stay in touch with your good friends from high school. Yes, it's important to make new friends in college but it's equally important to keep in touch with your old ones. In fact go do it right now! Send them a text, a Facebook message, or whatever you want. Just do it!

All the best- Becca

College Wardrobe Essentials

Okay ladies, who here loves clothes? I do! Clothes are great in my opinion and I love the new trends that are always circulating since it adds something new to the world of fashion! However, no matter how many times crop tops are in and out or high waisted shorts are the new trendiest item, there are some clothes in your wardrobe that you should always have because they are something that you will always use! Wanna know more? Keep reading!

1. A Little Black Dress
A LBD should always be in your wardrobe. The best thing about owning one is that it can be dressed up or dressed down. You can pull it out for fancy occasions or wear it on a date and look and feel awesome. Not only that but a LBD is so versatile and timeless, you'll get amazing use out of it. What's even better is that stores like Forever 21 and H&M sell LBDs for affordable prices so even college girls can get one they love!

2. Cardigans
I personally don't own many cardigans, but the ones I do own are amazing! In school, different rooms equal different temperatures to me. I get cold extremely easily but hot just as quick. Cardigans are great because you can wear a cute tank top but can throw something over it if you're cold or just take it off if you're warm. They also are great to throw on if you're going to something a little more conservative (like an old church) but don't want to cover up that cute new strapless dress you just got. Cardigans will save you and your outfit in so many situations so I suggest at least getting a neutral color.

3. White Dress Shirt
White dress shirts should be in your wardrobe forever! They're very basic but can be worn so many ways. You can roll up the sleeves and add a skater skirt with some ballet flats and you've got an adorable outfit you can wear to class! But roll down the sleeves, add a pencil skirt with some pumps and you're ready to do that presentation at 8am after five hours of sleep! The point I'm trying to make is that white dress shirts are so versatile that you'll always need one. I suggest getting a reasonably priced one to gauge how much you use it. If you use it more often than not, I would suggest getting a nicer one. An upgrade might cost a bit more money, but if you use it a lot I assure you it will be well worth it.

4. Comfortable Shoes
These can range from some good tennis shoes to ballet flats to sandals. Whatever you're most comfortable in is what you should consider buying. At college you're most likely going to be walking everywhere and that's going to take a toll on your feet. Sooner or later your feet are going to hurt like crazy and you're just going to want to go barefoot. Having comfortable shoes will make the walking a bit easier and if they're cute, you'll want to wear them all the time! Some shoes that I think are great for being on my feet all day are: Toms, Bobs, Vans, City Sneaks Shoes and Ballet Flats of any kind. Some are pricier than others but you won't even think about that when you're gliding across campus comfortably in your cute shoes.

5. Dark Wash Jeans
Dark wash jeans can be found in most every clothing store and in every cut. From skinny to flare, dark wash jeans will always be in. They make your body look great because of the wash and you'll feel just as great wearing them. They can also be dressed up or dressed down and the darker the wash, the more professional you look! Of course, this shouldn't be a replacement for professional attire, but it's something that will not only make you look good, but feel good too.

6. Blazer
Blazers come in all shapes, sizes and colors. The one you should have in your closet is a black, long-sleeved blazer since it is the universal blazer color and style. Throw this on over a nice blouse, add some heels and dress pants and you have yourself a power outfit! Blazers don't only have to be used for professional events but they can be worn as a light jacket. This will not only look nice and clean cut, but very put together as well. And who doesn't like to slip on an article of clothing and look like you spent hours getting ready?

7. Leggings
We all have those days when we just roll out of bed and don't feel like getting dressed. Well, when styled properly, leggings can make your outfit look amazing and while people compliment you on your style, you compliment yourself on how comfy you are. Not only that, but they can make your butt look great too! So just forget everyone who said you couldn't wear leggings because you can!

8. Black Heels
Two words: Power Shoes. Black heels are staple in any woman's wardrobe and can add the confidence you need. Just put them on and you'll instantly feel more powerful and confident and ready to take on your day. A great thing about black heels is that they come in different heel heights, heel thickness and styles. You can get a one inch, skinny heel just as easily as a thick platform heel and they're super affordable! I have a pair from Payless which I got for $25 and I absolutely love them!

9. Casual Dresses
Dresses are great for those days when pants aren't an option you're considering. I know that sometimes pants are not even on my mind when I'm getting dressed. Why? Because pants can be constricting. When I roll out of bed after a long night of studying, the last thing I want do is go into my closet and pull my jeans out. So for those days when you don't want to try but want to look like you did try, dresses are the way to go. Think about it, it's one piece of clothing, it goes over your head and there are so many different styles, you could basically wear a causal dress everyday if you wanted to! Who wouldn't love that?

10. A Jacket
Having a good, sturdy jacket is crucial for a few reasons. The first being that the seasons will change and some days it will feel like you're at the north pole in the morning, but in the desert by the afternoon. Jackets are great because you can throw them on and take them off. They're a lot like cardigans but the difference is, is that jackets are made to protect you against the elements. If there's a lot of wind, a jacket will protect you better than any cardigan ever will. All you have to do is find a jacket you love, get it, then wear it! It's easy as one, two, three!

I hope you all now have a better idea as to some essentials you should have to your wardrobe. Now depending on where you'll be attending college, some items won't apply to you and some you might want/need might not be on this list. Just go with your instinct and you'll be ready to take on your campus!

All the best! - Becca

Commonly Forgotten College Items

Hey everyone! So it's August! I know, crazy right? So for most students, we go back to school in a couple short weeks. (Can you believe that just a couple of months ago we were seniors in high school?) Between now and then you're probably packing for college like crazy. I for one, have boxes upon boxes in my room waiting to be filled. My room basically looks like a tornado went through it. So with my hair dryer in one box and my curling iron in another, you could say that my stuff is everywhere. I have my list of items I need to bring to school but am constantly worried that I'll forget something extremely important. So for the sake of our sanity and peace of mind, I have compiled a list of items commonly forgotten when packing for school.

1. Umbrella
Unless your college campus hardly ever has rain, you should remember to pack an umbrella. Nothing is worse than walking to class in your cute outfit and a downpour hits you. Not only will you be soaked when you enter the lecture hall but everything you're carrying with you-notes, essays and your laptop-will be ruined. So just make sure you have one incase you're ever caught in the rain.

2. Extra Batteries
You probably didn't think of this one did you? Batteries are a staple in college. They power little gadgets you have like your calculator and flashlights. Make sure you have a spare pack of AA and AAA batteries just incase because no one wants their calculator dying during math final.

3. A Safe
This one might be a bit odd but just hear me out. If you have a roommate you totally trust then you might want to disregard this item. But if you have a roommate you don't completely trust or feel like your stuff wouldn't be safe when you're out of your room, consider getting one. Mini safes are sold with a knob combination or with a key. Just evaluate your situation and then decide if you want to get one

4. Earplugs and Sleeping Mask
Okay, so it's 11:00 at night and you have a 9am class in the morning and you want to sleep. However, your roommate is up writing a paper that's due tomorrow. The overhead light is so bright and the constant typing is getting on your nerves. Well, this is the perfect time to get your earplugs and sleeping mask out. You can block out the noise and the light will be dimmer or completely gone. You will thank yourself in the morning when you're on your way to class not looking and feeling like a zombie. Just be aware that if you do this make sure your alarm is a little louder because you might not hear the sound go off if you have earplugs in.

5. Water Filter
Weird. Yes, I know. But sometimes college and dorm room water isn't the cleanest it can be. Instead of spending money on bottled water just get a water filter. This can be a big pitcher with a water filter or a water bottle with a filter in it. Personally, I recommend the BRITA water filters since I use them at home. It's good because your getting the best water you can and that will only help you and make you fee better.

6. Quarters
Do you plan on doing your laundry at school? I certainly hope so. In order to do that, you're going to need money for the washers and dryers. Most washers and dryers I've heard of seem to only take quarters in order to use them. Unless you're school is nice and includes washer and dryer credits with your housing plan like me, make sure you have money to do your laundry. You don't want to be in that situation where you're going through your laundry basket looking for something to wear then putting too much body spray on trying mask the smell of week old laundry.

7. Formal Clothes
These seem pretty obvious but seem to be forgotten a lot. It's mainly because when people pack for college they think of causal clothes for class and party clothes for going out at night. However, sometimes professors make you do presentations and have you dress up for them. This is when you need not panic about running to the store to get formal clothes because you'll already have them since your read this blog! You don't need to bring anything fancy just a nice business dress, or blouse and black pencil skirt work great and make sure you bring some black heels because you will feel empowered.

8. Important Documents
Important documents often are forgotten because people don't really think about them. The main documents I would bring are your passport, medical records, prescriptions, birth certificate and social security number. If you're not comfortable bringing your only copy, then make a copy and keep the real one at home. That way you have a copy, but if you ever need the real one it's just a phone call away. But if you do plan on bringing the real thing don't lose it because nothing good can come from losing your social security number.

9. First Aid Kit
This is just something good to have no matter where you are. In case you cut yourself in your dorm room or something like that, you don't have to go down to your floor mate's room to ask for a band-aid. You can just take out your kit and patch yourself up! Now, if you have a serious injury then go to your school's clinic. A first aid kit is NOT a replacement for actual medical attention.

10. Gym Clothes and a Bathing Suit
I'm betting that these items were the farthest thing from your mind in the way of clothes. Gym clothes are important because if you join a sport's team or just want to workout on campus, you'll need these. You'll be happy that you have breathable material to run around and sweat in. As for the bathing suit, if you're going to school near the beach then yes, bring a bathing suit! Most schools also have a pool that you can use to just swim whenever you like. I recommend bringing both a cute bathing suit when hanging out with friends as well as one that you can wear if you want to swim for exercise. Also be aware that if you want to play a water sport, your school might only allow one piece swim suits ladies.

I hope that now you'll remember to pack all of these items if you need them. Remember that this is not a definite list and that there are probably a lot of other items you might need to remember to bring. If it comes down to it, write a list of everything you need to remember to bring. That way when you're packing you'll remember everything!

Managing Your Money in College

Hi guys!
I hope you're all enjoying your summer vacation, I know I am! But let's talk about something serious: money. In college you have all sorts of new freedoms and one of them is being able to manage your own money. When you turn eighteen you are also eligible to have your own credit card and this can be a huge issue if you misuse it. While you should have fun in college, you shouldn't be spending all your money in one semester. I know it's summer but having this knowledge now, will better prepare you for when you enter college later in August. Here a just a few tips for you on how to manage your money in college.

1. DON'T Sign Up for a Credit Card
Let's be honest, credit cards are cool. They eliminate carrying cash around but they can also be extremely bad for you. When you use a credit card you're just swiping the plastic through the machine and aren't really keeping track of how much you spend. This can lead to huge problems down the road if you rack up a bill you can't pay. No one wants to be in that situation and normally it takes something like that to make you realize you need to be more conscious of how you spend your money. My advice to you is not to even apply for one. At some college campuses during the 'Freshman Week' or whatever your school calls it, credit card companies might be there to try to get you to sign up. You walk by the booth, you hear the 'amazing' things the company can do for you and you think to yourself, I'm an adult and having a credit card will help show that. So you sign up for one. A month later you get a bill for items you don't even remember buying and then you're in a bad situation and your credit is horrible. This can effect you later on in life when you're trying to get loans for big ticket items such as homes and cars. Don't put yourself in that situation.
Instead, try these other methods of payment. Debit cards for example are a great alternative to the credit card. You put money in your checking account and then when you swipe your card, the money is automatically taken out of your account. It's a lot less work then having to deal with credit card bills but it is a bit riskier. If you lose your debit card and someone finds it they could use it and you might not be able to get any of your money back. Also, if you spend more than what is in your checking account, you might be subject to fees by your bank. So while having a debit card is better way to keep your money in check, it can also lead to other problems. If you do decide on a debit card, just be careful.
Another way to have access to your money is to co-sign with your parents. Since all banks are different I highly suggest that if this is the route you take, you talk with your parents and your bank to make sure all rules and procedures are clear.

You could get a pre-paid credit card. Different companies have different types of pre-paid credit cards. The basis of the pre-paid card is that your parents put money on your card and once you use it, the money's gone until more is reloaded onto it. Different companies have different policies so make sure you shop around before settling on one.

Or just consider a gift card. If you're going on a trip and don't want to carry cash around with you then think about a gift card. You can load as much money as you want on it and it works basically like a credit card. Only with a gift card, you have a limit on what you can spend (which is different than a line of credit), so as soon as you spend all the money on the gift card, it's gone. It's a good option but be careful of hidden activation fees and things like that. Read the fine print before you decide to get one.

All in all, if you don't have a steady source of income, then don't get a credit card. If I were you, I would wait to have a stable good-paying job before I even considered applying for one. But even when you do have your card with a good-paying stable job, that doesn't give you the right to go on a shopping spree on 5th Avenue. Just remember that you have a card, but that doesn't mean you have to use it.

2. Budget Your Money
Budgeting your money is extremely important, especially in college. Whether you get a weekly allowance from your parents or have a job that pays you, you should be smart about your money and not go spend your paycheck on the first thing that catches your eye. By seeing how much money you have it will help you figure out how much you want to save for a Black Friday Shopping Spree or just to save for a rainy day. You should see how much income you have then decide on how much you want to save. From there you can decide what you want to spend your money on.
If you're not really looking for a budget but want to save there are a few good habits you could start.  One really good habit to get into is when you get your money, to take half and allow yourself to spend it while saving the other half. If you can't save half then put ten dollars in an envelope every time you get paid (every week is even better) and after a semester you will have a nice amount of change to use to pamper yourself with for getting through finals.

Budgeting sounds scary but you can do it! All it takes is a little planning and by no time you'll have some extra money to spend.

3. Talk to Your Bank
If you have a bank account (which at this point in your life you should) go have a talk with them. A lot of banks will help you manage your money. If you're concerned about going to talk to your bank about something you might not completely understand, go with your parents! Yes, go with your parents or someone you trust. Your parents and mentors are your number one guide to life so why not use them? Not only that, but I'm sure they'll be happy knowing that you have an interest in managing your finances.

These are just a few tips I use to manage my money and will continue to use while in college and probably beyond that. If you get creative, I'm sure you can find other ways to manage your money so you can afford that new laptop you've been wanting forever or that designer bag. Managing money isn't hard, it just takes time, effort and commitment so keep at it!
